The food we put in our bodies can foster energy and health or it can hold us back and make us sluggish. Why does choosing what I put in my mouth have to be so difficult? Moreover, does flavorful have to taste “healthy?” There are so many options: slow carb, no carb, vegetarian, vegan, and too much or too little soy. If my gut is too temperamental I can even cleanse it. Which one should I pursue, and why?  In Death By Food I promised another food article, so here we go. In this article I pick some interesting options, and assess.

The last few years my family has been enjoying Paleo, and it has been a glorious meat adventure.  Can you say bacon?  It is like the Beggin Strips dog treat commercial.  Bacon, bacon, where’s the bacon? Chewy, yummy, smokey, bacon!  Bacon is in everything and I love bacon. Paleo includes just about anything that can be hunted or gathered i.e. meat, raw vegetables, fruit, nuts, and excludes beans, dairy, grain, and anything processed.

Nothing processed? Well, how about slow carbs? Tim Ferriss is a proponent of the slow carb diet. This plan cuts out all starchy carbohydrates.  Yep, bread, rice, and potatoes are all gone.  It also says goodbye to fruit because the sugar, even though natural, spikes blood sugar.  You eat the same few meals over and over again.  The guy that studies biohacking tries his ideas on himself first, so he gets some props in my book. You even get a day off each week to eat anything you want. We’re not just talking a cheat meal, we’re talking about eating Bon Bons, Snickers, pizza and ice cream, then going out for dessert afterward. He seems on the fringe to me, and if variety is the spice of life, I enjoy some spice when it comes to meal planning. I am intrigued enough to try it to determine if the weight loss attributes are available without exercising. I’m about to be immobile for a bit and hope to keep the current shape of my body. Anyone want to try this with me?

From slow to no carbs, is it possible to maintain a diet based on fat alone? Certain nutrients in your diet are essential, some fats, amino acids and lots of vitamins and minerals, but sugars and carbohydrates are not required.  Foods containing added sugars, refined grains, and whole grains are least desirable, but carbohydrates in fruit, vegetables, and green vegetables allow the least amount of carbohydrates into the bloodstream, and carbohydrates break down into simple sugars.     

Could you eat only vegetables? I had no idea there are so many types of vegetarians.There’s Lacto-vegetarian, which excludes meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy like eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt, and butter. Ovo-vegetarian excludes meat, fish, seafood, poultry, dairy, but includes eggs. Mix the two for a Lacto-ovo vegetarian that excludes meat, seafood, poultry, but allows dairy products and eggs. Pescatarian eliminates meat, poultry, dairy, eggs, but allows fish. Pollotarian excludes meat, dairy, fish, but allows poultry. Vegans excuse all kinds of things from their diet, meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products, and food containing them, Whew! That’s enough variation on rabbit food to make me go order a hamburger.

No, not a soy burger, a hamburger. From the moment we’re born, we’re ingesting soy.  It is in infant formula, school lunches, and milk alternatives.  The Food and Drug Administration wants us to believe that soy reduces the risk of heart disease, but it also reduces fertility in women, triggers premature puberty in adolescent females, and disrupts the development of fetuses and children.  Feel like you are running the rat race yet? When tested on rats, females had reproductive issues, had smaller litters, and limited ability to reproduce. Male rats developed breast cells, yep manboobs. No, thank you.  I’d rather not have man boobs, or early developing reproductive systems in my house.  Out with soy, regardless how healthy its label may be.
